TSA PreCheck vs CLEAR vs Global Entry: Which One Do You Need?
The three programs are often mixed up. They solve different parts of the airport process, and they can be combined. Always confirm current prices and rules on the official program websites, because both change.
TSA PreCheck
PreCheck is a TSA program that gives approved travelers access to a separate security lane where you can usually leave on shoes, belts and light jackets and keep laptops and liquids in your bag. It requires an application, an in-person appointment for fingerprints and a background check. It applies to participating airlines and checkpoints.
Global Entry
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program for faster re-entry to the United States. It uses kiosks instead of a customs officer line when you arrive from abroad. Approved members also receive PreCheck eligibility, which is why many frequent international travelers choose it over PreCheck alone.
CLEAR
CLEAR is a private service that verifies your identity with biometrics so you can move to the front of the line at the document check. You still go through TSA screening, and you can use it alongside PreCheck. Availability varies by airport.
How to choose
If you fly a few times a year within the United States, PreCheck is usually the simplest option. If you fly internationally, look at Global Entry. If you often travel through airports with long ID lines, CLEAR may help. If you are unsure, check reports from travelers at your home airport before paying.
